Help...geometry...?

A shoe box is 24cm by 14cm by 9cm.

a. if the cover hangs by 1 1/2 cm and is 1/4 cm longer amd 1/4cm wider than the body, what is its total surface area?

b. the body of the box is made from a continuous piece of cardboard ; the corners, are cut off and thrown away, how much material is used in making the body of the box?

Help...geometry...?
a) For the surface area of the cover, excluding the overhang you have 24.25 cm x 14.25 cm = 345.5625cm2

The overhang is 2 x1.5 cm x (24.25 cm + 14.25 cm) = 115.5 cm2

So the surface area of the top = 345.5625+115.5 = 461.0625 cm2

Note: if you include the outside surface area of the top and also the inside surface area of the top, then this would be doubled to 922.125 cm2

b) Because the box is 9 cm deep the continuous piece of cardboard would have dimensions:

24 +9 + 9 = 42 cm, and 14+9+9 = 32 cm

So the amount of material required would be 42 x 32 = 1344 cm2
Reply:The surface area of the cover is 345.56 cm2

24.25cm x 14.25cm = 345.56cm2 (the information of the 1 1/2 cms is what ppl call a "distractor", it has no use at all in the question)

They use 1,344 cm2 of material to make the body of the box

24(lenght) + 9 (height) + 9(height) = 42

14(width) + 9(height) + 9(height) = 32

42cm x 24cm = 1,344 cm2

There you go...
Reply:a) cover surface area = 461.0625cm2

b) material = 1344 cm2

olgui is so wrong. The 1.5 cm still make up part of the surface area it is just bent 90° to the main part of the cover. What if the cover were lying on its side so the 1.5 cm part was facing up does that mean the 24.25x14.25 is considered a distracter? By your logic you don't need to take the sides of a cube into account when calculating its surface.
