Designer products, whats in a name?

Hello im thinking of some sociology project ideas and was wondering if I may have your imput

The designer handbag, jean, boots are very much apart of our culture. Why do some spend huge amounts of money on things? What makes this designer better than this one? Obviously popularity of the designer might raise value but that means everyone would have to do their own private research on that designer. Designers can be around for decades some you heard of some not, do you research them? What makes this shoe popular than this one? Why pay $500 for jeans when you can get them for $50 knowing the material and the quality are about the same? There will be a time when you get tired of them and give them to a thrift store so they can sell it for under 5 especially since the designer isnt as well known unless your into fashion. Im sure money is a factor but me Id rather have 10, $50 jeans instead of 1 $500 pair.

Designer products, whats in a name?
I just love love love to answer this question and I don't think I ever get tired of it.........you are paying for the experience of the designer's input ----- it's like why spend money on mercedez, bmw, audi, porsche - the design matters, whether it's industrial design, fabric design, metals, etc.....proper design dictates our experience

It's one high price but the experience is forever, endless, again and again and again
Reply:You can get your very own designer bag from http://urlx.org/doiop.com/a07a3 for free. All you have to do is fill out the survey. My girlfriend got her bag from that site and all she had to do was choose the bag she wanted and enter in her email address.
Reply:I like the idea u have for ur paper... Of course design is a large part of it, many times fabrics and total quality of a product are higher, another big reason for me is that designer products I have bought are generally made by hand by a skilled artisan which gives me the gaurantee that the items are not made using child labor(this is a big reason why I am not sure why people insist on buying stupid knockoff designer items. they obviously don't understand that a 5yr old probably made their fake Chanel vinyl handbag)... and yes I know many other items I buy day 2 day have no gaurantee of this but u do the best u can...and when u know better then u should do better (especially if u r financially capable)

There's another idea for your paper...the better question is why people who can not afford high end designer products insist on having the knock off version...what are they getting from it? Do they feel better about themselves or richer etc...

There are other products such as cars where I totally agree that there is no really good reason 2 purchase SOME of the higher end vehicles. Many have much better safety ratings and features which are important but these things can be purchased at a more reasonable price too.... a good example I just purchased a VW Passat and the ads at the store say "lowest ego emissions of any german engineered car" clearly speaking about BMW etc. Doing my reasearch this car has better safety ratings then BMW and had pretty comparable specs but the price tag was waaay cheaper so I went with the Passat...
Reply:well some not all. but some are worth it. some buy their "designs" from the fashion district here in LA. some use really expensive fabrics or just high quality that feels good. as far as the status that people get from wearing a shirt that says dg or whatever, not sure... just showing off i suppose, or it was a gift... every designer is different so someone interested in fashion may have a favorite designer, have you seen valentinos work? i buy cheap everything, i get discounts or gifts on the "other stuff"
Reply:If names and labels sound nice and are made by famous celebs or are very popular they are bound to sell fast. People are trying to "make their mark in society" by buying these things. People think that if they spend money on expensive things, they will be popular or noticed more. And people who buy things for bargains are usually known as earthy, poor people. I know this from school experience..
Reply:I'm with you. Not only am I not so insecure that I need to show off how I buy standing with my clothes, but I refuse to give these companies free advertising, much less pay for it!
Reply:you might find this interesting, this site is dedicated to authenticating Air Jordans because the market is so flooded with knock offs.

Reply:Good designers stay rich and famous for decades because they know how to influence a market and they make beautiful/attractive clothing.

High fashion designers run a very risky business because they always have to stay one step ahead of everyone else. They can't just sit back and put out a line that everyone has seen before. They take risks and people sometimes love their creations, sometimes they don't, but this is how they become in demand.

You usually can't get clothing from designers like D%26amp;G or Dior for even $500.. $50 is just laughable. Most items for a collection cost over $1000 an item, and some dresses can cost even more than $10,000 (that's not a rare occurrence). Most of the public do not have access to these items except through knock offs, imitation, or older items (when these expensive items have been sitting on the shelf for a few years).

Low fashion, or commercial brand names like Abercrombie %26amp; Fitch are popular because they make comfortable, popular clothing (not popular as in "fad". It's more like, jeans will never go out of style because people need them). But, A%26amp;F also markets a lot towards high school students and most high schoolers wear that brand because of mob mentality (high schoolers are trying to fit in and find their place.. wearing the same brand makes them think they are).

Anyway, it's really late and I don't even know if what I wrote makes any sense. Try to glean whatever logic you can from it. Good luck with your project!
