Designer products, whats in a name?

Hello im thinking of some sociology project ideas and was wondering if I may have your imput


The designer handbag, jean, boots are very much apart of our culture. Why do some spend huge amounts of money on things? What makes this designer better than this one? Obviously popularity of the designer might raise value but that means everyone would have to do their own private research on that designer. Designers can be around for decades some you heard of some not, do you research them? What makes this shoe popular than this one? Why pay $500 for jeans when you can get them for $50 knowing the material and the quality are about the same? There will be a time when you get tired of them and give them to a thrift store so they can sell it for under 5 especially since the designer isnt as well known unless your into fashion. Im sure money is a factor but me Id rather have 10, $50 jeans instead of 1 $500 pair.

Many people equate personal worth with material things. Personally, I don't. As long as something is well-made and comfortable, I don't care if it's designer or not. I think some people need these things to increase their feelings of self-worth. Too late we often discover it's what's on the inside rather than on the outside. You sound like you're okay.

Reply:People spend huge amounts of money for exactly that the name and competition with other people who spend ridiculously large amounts of money on any designer items. Me I stick with my Levi jeans and my Target, Walmart and Pennys clothes shoes and purses and other items. I've found out they last just as long and in many cases longer.

Reply:Well, to me it's always been: They have no life, no identity, no self-respect, despite all their money. They don't impress anybody. If anything, people think they're stupid. So they buy designer stuff and think it impresses people. NOT! Pay attention to me because I spent all this money on..... And I just look at them and giggle. Just like everybody makes a big deal about who wears what to the Oscars? It's all rented stuff. Even rich movie stars aren't stupid enough to buy the clothes and jewelry they wear; they rent it! A watch made by Gucci or a Rolex whatever with a diamond on each hour keeps the same time as a $9.95 Timex. And as the old commercial goes, "it keeps on tickin'. " But if you forget to take your diamond studded watch off before you hop in the shower - sucks for you! They should come out with a special brand for people like that -"Sucker."
