How can I get a really good shine on my best leather shoes?

I have a nice pair of formal black leather Oxfords which I use for job interviews, weddings, and other such collar-and-tie events. I polish my shoes using a pot of Kiwi black polish and a set of two brushes, which keeps them clean but does not make them shine. I was never taught how to properly clean my shoes.

Unlike some of my family I, for medical reasons, do not have the benefit of a military education and so I was never able to clean my shoes so they literally shone flawlessly.

How can I achieve this gleaming finish? I have heard using a rag with a little dab of water helps, but how exactly, and what materials should I use or avoid?

Thanks!

You're nearly doing it right - but not quite. Firstly and very importantly, put a couple of drops of detergent in a bowl of warm water and wipe over shoes with damp cloth thats been dipped in the bowl. Clean every part of the leather, This is to remove dust, residues, chemicals, splashes that have accumulated while shoes have been worn . The polish should be applied to a very clean surface. Apply black polish (Kiwi is fine) with a soft cloth, not a brush. (the material from an old T shirt is ideal). The cloth should be very slightly damp. Work polish in small rotational movements. There should be a thin cloudy film of polish, not caked on. Leave for 10-15 mins to dry. Buff up with a brush, working quite fast, ensuring all areas have been shined. Now apply a second layer of polish as before and buff up with a brush. And a third layer of polish - and buff with a brush BUT then shine up with another clean soft cloth. You only need to do the 3 layers of polish every 3-4 weeks, cleaning up in between with just one layer, time allowing. Obviously th more layers of polish you keep adding the higher the shine, but I've can't tell any improvement after the 3 application. Allow an hour to clean them firts time thoroughly, thereafter it can be maintained in 2 mins. You'll see - it's easy to keep them shiny.
Reply:i was in the forces and the method for getting glass like shine is a method using cotton wool , water , boot polish , use a yellow duster similar soft cloth a small amount of polish , wrap cloth around your index finger , and apply on to boot or shoe in small circular motion , round and round you will find a rhythm to this leave to dry , them brush to a basic shine , now with cotton wool mould round your finger wet it with water ( spit ) and same technique circular motion , and you just keep on doing it repeating the process more you do deeper the shine , spit and polish along process but you did ask
Reply:dont know if this will help but we did it in the airforce you get some kiwi polish and put it on fairly thick then you get two soft cloths one cloth you dip into some water and procede like this, take the damp cloth and rub your shoes with it in small circles and repeat allover the shoes dipping regulary in the water repeat over a couple of weeks and you should get desired effect good luck and keep at it with the second cloth you use as a buffing cloth
Reply:my grandfather always used vaseline on his spectators.
